Raphael Sagarra aka Finok Sao Paulo, Brazil, b. 1985
Sagarra’s work introduces us to marginalised, contemporary Brazilian subcultures living a reality removed from and at odds to that of the vast majority.
Since adolescence and as a practicing graffiti artist, Sagarra has followed and participated in underground movements that are devalued by society. His research begins in environments that in some way relate to this notion of abandonment and the work develops from notes taken while in transit through these spaces in the form of photographs, conversations with local people or memories. These records then take shape in his paintings, via a particular palette and visual language, suggesting a blend of cultural moments such as carnival, Brazilian hooligan groups and the wider break down of society.
Solo exhibitions include the Museu de Arte Contemporanea de MS, Brazil, and the Museu de Arte de Blumenau, Brazil.
His work has been acquired by the Museu de Arte do Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
