Lavar Munroe interviewed in Volume 17

“I use colour to lure people in, but once they engage, they see the critical themes—corruption, obituaries, police violence,” Munroe begins, explaining how his use of vibrant shades juxtaposed with grim realities characterises his work, drawing viewers in with beauty only to confront them with unsettling truths. “They think they’re seeing something decorative until they realise what's really there. I’ve made similar pieces from cardboard found in homeless shelters, crafting sculptures that critique society’s neglect of these individuals while elevating the material itself.”
