Africains Everywhere

The Margaux and Raphaël Blavy Collection | Château de Montgoger – Musée de Saint Épain

Contemporary African art in the 21st century embodies contemporary consciousness by directly, uniquely, and universally confronting the major challenges of our society. By redefining portraiture through what became known as "Black Figuration," contemporary African artists went beyond the depiction of the figure and transformed the portrait into a mirror of contemporary society, urgently affirming the existence of individuals and societies long marginalized. Africains Everywhere!

In homage to the 2024 Venice Biennale, where curator Adriano Pedrosa highlights the presence of "Foreigners Everywhere," the exhibition "Africains Everywhere" offers an immersion into the refiguration of the art world achieved thanks to contemporary African art, showcasing selections from the Margaux and Raphaël Blavy Collection.

The exhibition, originating from a partnership between the Centre Pompidou and the Centre-Val de Loire region for the Festival AR(t)CHIPEL, unfolds between the Château de Montgoger, which hosts the collection, and the village of Saint-Épain, including the Musée de la Prévoté, Salle Jeanne d’Arc (Wooden Theater), and the village’s church.

Exhibition dates: 19 October - 3 November, 2024
